The Oarsome Challenge is one of 2 fundraisers Mossbourne participate in to raise funds to support the rowing programme, buy equipment and allow Mossbourne students to be the only state school in the UK to row for free!
The Oarsome Challenge is an on water race in 8+'s from Grenwich through the middle of London finishing at Chiswick. The race is approximately 20 miles and finishes along the 7km stretch of water between Putney and Chiswick which the Oxford v's Cambridge Boat Race is held. 40 crews signed up to compete at this years Oarsome Challenge including 4 Mossbourne Parents 8+'s. The 32 Mossbourne Parents started training a few months before the race in preparation for the event, rowing out of the newly established Olympic Park rowing venue. On the day the 4 crews rowed amazing, with the Mossbourne Crew "Finishing Str8" winning the event! An amazing performance from these parents. As well as taking the win we raised over £6,400 taking our yearly fundraising for the 2 parents events to £14,400.

to everyone who competed at the National Schools Regatta over the weekend. With over 5000 athletes from 153 clubs and schools competing NSR is the biggest junior regatta in the world. We were blessed with 3 amazing days and I hope you all got to watch some of the racing and see the standard of rowing on display. The extremely high standard of rowing in the UK is credit to the dedication, commitment and determination of the rowers not only on the race day but during the cold winter months throughout the year building up to the race. National Schools Medals are won during the winter months and collected at the end of May. I have attached the full list of results including finish positions, times and GMTs from Mossbourne crews and the event winners. There were some great results however a special mention has to go to the following 3 crews. Senior Girls 4x - The senior girls 4x who are all year 12's racing against year 13s have showed a huge improvement over the last few weeks. All the crews they were racing at Junior Sculling Regatta back in April were competing at National Schools plus another 15 more. They placed 24th in a huge entry beating a long list of crews who had beaten them earlier in the season including crews from Kings Ely and Westminster College. This will stand them in a good position to Qualify for Henley Women's and Henley Royal Regatta later on in the season. J16 Boys 4+ - The year 11 crews have it tough this time of year juggling their GCSE exams, revision and training and a lack of study leave which all of our competitors are blessed with. Reaching the A final of the event which included Westminster, Shiplake and St Edwards was the target for this 4. They did in style this finishing 5th overall. A fantastic result, overturning a defeat from Enniskillen (Ireland) earlier in the regatta. J15 Boys 4+ - These 4 rowers and coxswain were going in to the regatta having never raced together before because of a lack of availability at the warm up regattas and some students taking their GCSE exams a year early. "Let's just get from A to B as fast as we can and see how we do" was the race plan set out by one of the rowers. Their simple plan worked well in the first round, winning the time trial and going straight in to the A final as the fastest ranked crew. In a close final they rowed brilliantly to take home the silver medal defeating St Pauls, Windsor Boys and Bedford along the way.
A special mention also has to go to our amazing group of parents who came along on Friday to support the rowers. There was a great atmosphere in the Gazebo and an amazing BBQ and it really made a difference to the performance of the rowers who could hear you cheering them on. The coaches could hear the roars from the other side of the lake as we cycled down with the races. The gazebo set up and support has snowballed over the last 2 years and I hope next year we can have an even bigger and better Mossbourne supporters' group down on all 3 days. In February Mossbourne rowing attended the South East UK trials. The winners of the trial gain selection to represent the South East UK at the Inter Regional Regatta in April. The South East is one of 12 regions who race at the National Water Sport Centre in Nottingham. Mossbourne were successful in qualifying 7 crews and 38 rowers for the South East team who would race at the Inter Regional Regatta in April. Mossbourne (Rowing as the South East) qualified for 3 A finals at the regatta (Top 6). The stand out result of the day was a Bronze Medal for your Year 11 Boys 4+.
The Schools Head of the River Race is one of highest participated in events in the UK. With over 3500 competitors competing for their schools over the 6.8km Championship course between Mortlake and Putney. This year Mossbourne had 49 rowers racing in 6 crews. Our rowers were superbly hosted by Auriol Kensington Rowing Club in Hammersmith and our parents supporters were treated to an excellent view of the course from their 3rd floor balcony. Our J16 Boys Crew were the first crew down the course. After winning the J15 event last year they were keen to hold on to their title. The crew was coxed by J15 Rower Caspar, who steered a fantastic course overtaking several crews as they raced past the the parent supporters on the balcony of Auriol Kensington. They finished in 3rd place overall, an exceptional result especially as they had a last minute, J15 substitute on board. Next down the course were our J18 Womens 8+. Their focus this season has been on sculling, so racing in a sweep 8+ was an experiment. The crew which was stroked by Inaya and coxed by Alione raced aggressively down the course finishing in 17th position. Our 2 J15 Boys boats were competing on the tideway for the first time in their rowing careers. Our 'A' crew started in the prestigious number one position in their category. They set off at a ferocious pace, quickly catching some of the crews in front of them and unfortunately tangling themselves in some traffic which cost them valuable time. They finished in 7th place overall, still a great result at this event. Our B Crew finished in 13th place, a commendable position for a 'B' crew. Our year 12 Junior Women's Quad were racing in the J18 event against mostly year 13 girls. They had a superb run down the course and were our only coxless boat racing. Violet steered an amazing course down the notoriously hard to navigate tideway course. They finished 28th in a very competitive division. Last to run down the course was our J15 Girls 8+. Similar to the senior girls, their focus this year has been on sculling so the sweep 8+ was a bit of an experiment. Zuilaka steered a great line along the tideway and the stern pair of Lena and Natalie provided a great rhythm for the rest of the crew to follow. They finished 7th overall in their category.
Race the Thames is one of our 2 Annual fundraisers at the Rowing Academy. The aim of the event is to raise funds to help support the programme and to integrate the parents/grandparents and guardians of the rowers to generate a social side to the club and encourage support at regattas.
This year we had 5 parent teams and 14 student teams racing the 72km race which is the equivalent to the tidal stretch of the River Thames. In total 152 people took part. Rowers were competing online against hundreds of other teams in across the world. Mossbourne were victorious in the Junior Boys and Junior Girls events and had the 3rd fastest mixed adult team (Finishing Str8 – Year 10 Parents team) In total we raised just over £8,000. With another fundraiser set in January we look on target to beat the total we raised in 2021/22. Bedford Head - Sunday 23rd February 2023Mossbourne Rowing Academy competed at Bedford Head on 12th February. Their first event since the Christmas break. It was an opportunity for the more senior rowers to test themselves before the Schools Head of the River in March and a chance for the new year 9 rowers to compete for the first time since joining the racing squad in September. Over 70 Mossbourne rowers competed in 5 divisions throughout the day. The notoriously twisty Bedford course sees the rowers navigate 5 bridges along the the Great River Ouse, these bends and bridges are a challenge for boats with a cox and even more so for cox less boats where rowers steer with a steering foot. Thankfully we came away with all our equipment in good working order thanks to some excellent steering form our coxess and steers people. Of the 70 rowers and 20 crews we had competing we were fortunate to come away with 5 event wins. Our J14 Boys 8x+ were winners of their category. A great result for their first ever competitive race. The J16 Girls quad which featured 3 MVPA rowers were winners in their fiercely contested event, they took the win by just one second over Bedford Girls School thanks to some excellent steering through the bridges. The J14 Boys 4x+ produced a phenomenal, powerful row to win their event by 30 seconds beating crews from Star Club and Bedford. Our J14 Girls 4x+ (Pictured here in the 8x) were winners of their event, another great performance on their first ever competitive outing for the club. Our J15 Boys 4+ (Pictured here racing in their 8+) Were winners of their event. They also produced the highest GMT% of the day from all the Mossbourne crews racing. In total 28 Mossbourne rowers came away with rowing tankards. 3 crews also finished in 2nd place positions. A brilliant day out for all the rowers involved.
On Sunday 26th September Mossbourne Rowing Academy competed at Maidstone Head. Over 50 Mossbourne athletes were competing against 150 crews over the 2.5km timed course. Mossbourne had 17 crews competing in doubles, quads and fours. There were some outstanding performances from our crews and we accumulated 4 event wins. Our Boys J15 4+ of David, Sam, Adam and Red coxed by Isaac were victorious in their event. Also victorious were the J17 4x+ of Violet, Ophelia, Tahiya and Isabella coxed by Raya. Molly and Lola were winners of the J16 Girls 2x event. Our J16 Boys 4+ of Loukas, Kiko, Dylan and Matty were coxed by Isaac. They were winners of the Open Mens 4+ event. Well done to all the rowers who competed and conducted themselves extremely professionally throughout the day.
National Schools Regatta - May 2022Mossbourne Rowing Academy took 78 athletes to compete at the biggest junior regatta in the World. National Schools Regatta hosts over 5000 junior rowers from all over the UK and is one of the highlights of the racing calendar alongside The Schools Head of the River and Henley Royal Regatta. In 2021 Mossbourne reached their first A final Finishing in 6th position in the J18 Boys 4+. Our Year 9 Boys 2nd crew were racing in the second 8’s event and also reached the A final and finished 6th. Our Boys J18 4+ also reached the A final and placed 4th.6th Form Boys and Year 9 Boys were our 2 other crews to reach the A finalsOur year 10 and Year 11 Girls Reached the B Finals.
